COMAL is a gathering place located in Berkeley’s bustling Arts District, just north of the Downtown Berkeley BART Station. The restaurant is housed in a single story building (circa 1927) and features a large secluded rear patio with a full bar, covered dining area and al fresco beer garden with fire pit.
Executive Chef Matt Gandin, former chef de cuisine at San Francisco’s Delfina, creates earthy, modern interpretations of dishes from throughout Mexico, with emphasis on Oaxaca and neighboring coastal regions. We offer an “all-Mexican” list of craft cocktails, house-made sangritas paired with our curated collection of agave spirits, and a diverse selection of local beer and wine on tap.
Comal takes limited reservations for parties of 1-7 people to be seated at 5:30pm every night. After the 5:30pm reservations are seated, guests are seated by our hosts on a first-come, first-served basis (parties must be complete to be seated) in both the main dining room (including our two communal tables and chef’s counter) and the covered patio. Both bars are self-seated. Reservations can be made in person or by calling 510.926.6300.
For parties of 8 - 10 people we offer a fixed price family-style dinner at our community table at 5:30pm (and again at 8:15pm contingent on a first seating). We also have a private dining room downstairs that seats 12-22 people.
